Fresh analysis indicates that people who stop using popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals using such treatments should be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the jabs explains the amplified rebound.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful return of appetite.
"It was like something that goes on and you become starving," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
