The player's varied form on the ATP Tour - and issues with his service game in especial - resulted in him dropping out of the top ten and finally parting ways with long-time coach Cervara.
Currently working with Johansson and his other coach, he has gradually advanced in the recent weeks - climaxing in a tightly fought three-set victory over opponent Moutet.

His retrieving play style and recurring emotional displays on court had prompted some to wonder if his ability to compete at the top level was over.
Yet the player has made changes in recent weeks, striving to come to the net and play assertively, backed up by an enhanced serve.
Medvedev came back from a deficit in the first set against the challenging opponent, taking four of the concluding five exchanges to gain the advantage.
The pair swapped break points in the middle set before the Frenchman, striving for his first ATP Tour victory, gained dominance to create a decider.
Moutet rescued 4 early break points in a competitive third set before the Russian broke to fifteen to serve for the match.
Suitably, Medvedev earned the title with a shot at the net, with Moutet incapable to control a volley after over two and a half hours.
